Our Mission
Inspired by the personal battles and triumphs we live every day,
Diabetes Outdoors was established to support the daily lives of individuals
and families living with diabetes. By encouraging healthy lifestyles and building active communities,
we enrich the quality of life with diabetes and lessen the impact of related complications.
In November 2008, Lars and Trevelyn Yahr founded Diabetes Outdoors. Lars has lived with
type 1 diabetes for over 25 years, and in 2006, their oldest son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes
at the age of four. Diabetes management is immersed in their daily routine. Testing blood sugar
happens more often than brushing teeth, and despite the relentless nature of the disease, diabetes
doesn't stop them from doing anything.
For twenty-five years, Lars has balanced diabetes with surfing, kayaking, SCUBA diving, mountain
biking, and backcountry hiking. He is an outdoor adventurer and a certified naturalist, yet he never
forgets about diabetes. Without excellent control, he wouldn't be diving off the coast of the
Channel Islands or hiking the El Capitan backcountry.
Diabetes Outdoors was founded with the same determined spirit. The organization combines
an enthusiasm for the outdoors with a desire to inspire and motivate others living with diabetes.
The programs prepare diabetics for outdoor adventure and create a positive atmosphere
of cooperation and collaboration by encouraging all family members to get involved in fitness,
exercise, and outdoor recreation.
Diabetes Outdoors is a 501(c)(3) public charity based in Ventura, California. All donations
are tax-deductible.
